Here&#8217;s what caught our attention last week.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World | Is carbon capture another distraction or a promising solution?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is current consensus on the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3df3f408-57a0-4718-b8d6-f8629118b7eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carbon neutrality is unreachable<\/a> without the introduction of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), as highlighted in the latest IPCC report. However, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/video\/25df7aa2-e414-484f-ac2f-63e06644fcb1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debate<\/a> on the appropriate role for CCS in the decarbonization process. Relying too much on CCS could disincentivize other more immediate and efficient actions to cut emissions at the source.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/insights\/ipcc-report-2022-mitigation-climate-change?utm_campaign=wridigest&amp;utm_source=wridigest-2022-04-05&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=readmore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Climate experts<\/a> agree that to decarbonize, priority must be given to ending fossil fuels consumption. CCS, an expensive technology, should be used in limited and targeted ways. Cheaper technologies, such as renewable energy, are already available and can be deployed more rapidly to decarbonize sectors such as power generation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some countries, storage capacity may also be an issue. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionzero.org\/reports\/advanced-coal-in-japan\">recent report<\/a> focusing on \u201cJapan\u2019s advanced coal technologies\u201d, British NGO TransitionZero warns that <em>\u201cJapan\u2019s limited geological storage potential means CCS is not a sustainable solution to keep coal in the energy mix. Japan\u2019s storage capacity could run out in just one decade.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe | Changes in&nbsp;VAT rules to prop up environment-friendly products &nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The European Commission is working on updating rules that governs the thirty-year-old VAT rates. This <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/qanda_21_6609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modernization<\/a> aims also at aligning VAT rules with EU\u2019s climate policy and efforts towards a sustainable economic recovery after the COVID-19 crisis.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So called \u201cEnvironmental VAT\u201d or \u201ceco-detax,\u201d these new rules would exonerate green products from VAT (= 20% price decrease), making them more economically appealing than their polluting alternatives, which are usually cheaper for now.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecodetaxe.eu\/en-detail\/?cli_action=1649999177.875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group of consultants<\/a>, supporters of the reform since long ago, describes it as a \u201cweapon for massive transformation of our economic model\u201d in their column for French newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2022\/04\/12\/la-tva-environnementale-va-permettre-d-aligner-choix-de-consommation-et-convictions-ecologiques_6121842_3232.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Le Monde<\/a>. Indeed, the mentioned above changes in the VAT rules will help to internalize in final consumer prices the environmental impact (externality) of production processes, and thus, help the&nbsp;conciliation of consumption behaviors and ecological matters.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US | Regulator confirms its intention to require&nbsp;climate disclosure for US listed firms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gary Gensler, the Chair of U.S Securities and Exchange Commission reminded in&nbsp;its remarks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-04-12\/gensler-says-climate-change-plan-consistent-with-sec-authorities?srnd=green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceres.org\/events\/webinar-briefing-sec-climate-disclosure-rule-gary-gensler?msclkid=92558d4ebc7011ecb726ce06cc572379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ceres<\/a> that requiring&nbsp;companies\u2019 disclosure of climate&nbsp;information&nbsp;is part of SEC\u2019s role.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chairperson referred to the agency\u2019s \u201clong tradition of disclosures\u201d which must now be tuned with the global tendency towards climate-related disclosure requirements and needs. In this context, the SEC\u2019s authority would add a long-waited layer of standardization.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He noted that the agency remains open to suggestions and feedback on the changes to be made to&nbsp;its proposal published last month. Industry lobbyists would potentially have numerous legal levels to challenge&nbsp;the proposal that appears to some as outside of the SEC\u2019s remit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">France | Shareholders submit new climate motion against TotalEnergies&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies prepares for confronting with its climate-sensitive investors during its next shareholders\u2019 meeting on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> of May.&nbsp; 12 of them (0.8%&nbsp;of&nbsp;company\u2019s capital) presented a resolution requiring the company to align its investment policy with Paris Agreements\u2019 goals and to give access to \u201ccomprehensive and quality information\u201d on its climate strategy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BP, Shell, Exxon Mobil have already been dealing with similar resolutions. These cases reflect the mounting pressure on fossil fuels giants to raise their ambitions for climate change mitigation and adaptation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Globally, investors and assets managers, such as MN Services NV (Netherlands) and LFDE (France) which leads the push on TotalEnergies, are getting more exigent on companies\u2019 pledges and actions to stop global warming. As most of them are currently not doing enough, these resolutions are about to become more frequent and are already receiving increasing shareholder backing.<em><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>More coverage on this story: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-04-13\/totalenergies-investors-demand-bigger-climate-push-ahead-of-agm?srnd=green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/investors-pressure-totalenergies-align-with-paris-climate-deal-2022-04-13\/?msclkid=79e6aecfbc6611ec86f959dd56d3c0d1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.challenges.fr\/finance-et-marche\/totalenergies-nouvelle-resolution-climat-soumise-a-l-ag-par-des-actionnaires_809415?msclkid=20d47a92bc6511ecbc5930ea67bf3a65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Challenges<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe\/Japan | Europe\u2019s energy crisis \u201cshows Japan the direction to pursue\u201d&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The last two years\u2019 increase in global energy consumption led to a boom in fossil fuels\u2019 prices, both because of the COVID-19 crisis and the recent geopolitical context nervosity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewable-ei.org\/en\/activities\/column\/REupdate\/20220412.php\">According to the Renewable Energy Institute<\/a>, if winter 2021-2022 revealed the pitfalls of European power systems in Europe, it also highlighted the economic potential of renewables, as Germany manage to meet 100% of its electricity demand through wind and solar power temporarily in March.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This suggests that once technological solutions would have stabilized the renewable energy supply capacities, the harmonization of energy security and carbon neutrality is only a matter of time.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Europe suffered the most from this energy crisis because of its dependence on fossil fuels imports from Russia.&nbsp;As an importer country, Japan is as well critically vulnerable to surges in prices.
