Here&#8217;s what caught our attention last week.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World | UN chief warns that more fossil fuels investment is just \u201cdelusional\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres renewed its call to G20 countries to \u201cdismantle coal infrastructure\u201d and to aim for a full phase-out by 2030. He extended his call to financial actors to abandon their support to the fossil fuel economy for the development of renewables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He straightly criticized national governments for making pledges that are simply \u201cnot good enough\u201d and for setting climate policies that are far from what are expecting scientific and citizen communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Read more about this story: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/06\/1120372\"><em>UN official website<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World | Students asking universities to better align curriculum with climate urgency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Academic groups have been pushing for universities to respond to climate urgencies, most of them are late in acknowledging the need to update their curriculum accordingly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is now changing, as the demand for climate skills and knowledge is sharply rising in the race for net-zero by 2050. The case has been relayed by The Wall Street Journal, but the SEC refused to comment publicly on it for now.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This may be a first demonstration of the SEC\u2019s recent commitment to hunt greenwashing in financial institutions\u2019 sustainability claims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Read more about this story: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5812ab1f-c2d4-4681-a6be-45f0befd92df\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.co.jp\/news\/articles\/2022-06-12\/RDC8S8T0AFB501\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Comment from Codo: This story echoes the Deutsche Bank and DWS case featured in our weekly news summary two week ago, with the German police raiding the offices of the bank as part of an investigation from the German financial regulator over fake ESG claims. This case is also under investigation by the American regulator.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asia | Study shows that climate change can result in collapse of yen and yuan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A recent study from <a href=\"https:\/\/home.barclays\/sustainability\/addressing-climate-change\/financing-the-transition\/sustainable-impact-capital\/\">Barclays<\/a> confirms that a severe climate shock will disrupt the global economy. It shows how in the worst scenarios, the Chinese yuan and the Japanese yen will drop by more than 50% before 2070.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on the incorporation of climate change forecasts into their model, they derived prediction for currency markets. The study also points out that for now \u201cmarkets are priced for a 2\u00b0C world\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About the Japanese yen, the study explains that geography is why this currency is one of the \u201cmost vulnerable\u201d in the scenario of extreme climate change, potentially losing 11% of its value each year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Read more about this story: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-14\/barclays-says-climate-disaster-will-collapse-major-currencies?srnd=green\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/banking-finance\/article\/3181705\/yuan-currency-most-exposed-climate-change-losing-half-its\">South China Morning Post<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">South Korea | Businesses practices over plastic use drastically changing to meet consumers\u2019 expectations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong zero-waste movements in Korea leave domestic companies with no room for complacency. Society\u2019s engagement to change for green practices made Korea to rank top in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/03\/24\/1048253\/the-green-future-index-2022\/\">MIT\u2019s Green Future Index 2022<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government is also pushing this trend for green living through an extension of producer responsibility program around plastic waste and other upcoming measures to upgrade country\u2019s waste management system. Korea aims at becoming a \u201cbenchmark\u201d in the field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domestic companies and local branches are also swiftly adapting to this new demand. For example, Starbucks Korea will make its store plastic-free by 2025. Yet, activists deplore that more fundamental discussions around industrial restructuring and shift towards renewables are still lacking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Read more about this story: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/77f5267b-e858-4ed8-8740-a0484919f8fe\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japan | Toyota attacked by European investors for not engaging in green transition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green activist investors and three major European pension funds openly criticized the Japanese car manufacturer\u2019s climate strategy during the annual shareholder meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deploring its \u201clobbying against much-need climate related regulation of the auto industry\u201d, critical investors also point out that Toyota is only \u201cbuying time\u201d until it can reposition in EV market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More attacks of this kind are expected as Toyota\u2019s approach already undermines its capacity to transition from polluting cars. Last year, the company\u2019s climate policy engagement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencemap.org\/pressrelease\/Toyota-s-Carbon-Neutrality-Statement-9c8e5a934f3f6f6cb52c2b3f481c2a5e\">has been graded among the lowest<\/a> in the industry. These two stories of European investors attacking Japanese companies on their climate plans could be the first of a bigger wave of attacks from occidental shareholders concerned about the apparent weaknesses of low-carbon transition strategies of Japanese firms. In this context, Japanese companies could benefit from \u201cstress testing\u201d their plans, to identify weaknesses ahead of attacks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japan | Government recent push for net-zero opens industries\u2019 eyes to existing opportunities\u2026 but do they look at the right ones?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/sustainability\/our-insights\/the-net-zero-transition-what-it-would-cost-what-it-could-bring\">latest research<\/a> and market investigation by <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/static\/vdata\/infographics\/climate-leaders\/\">Nikkei Asia<\/a>, Japan has the potential to do more, and even better than its Asian counterparts in the race for decarbonization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the global level though, Japan is everything but close to pro-eminence. Country\u2019s resistance in parting of with coals and its lack of proactivity in the development of renewables are two important reasons for its worsening lag against its European counterparts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yet, McKinsey analysts are confident in the country\u2019s capacity to realize decarbonization at relatively low costs if measures are taken before 2050, after which they would \u201crise substantially\u201d. It is a dangerous path, as these technologies will not be able to cut emissions early enough to meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement.
