Here&#8217;s what caught our attention last week.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World | $110 billion required to make sharp cut on methane global emissions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In its latest study, the Climate Policy Institute shows that global spending must be increased tenfold up to $110 billion in order to curb methane emissions, one of the worst contributors to climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As for today, only 2% of climate finance worldwide is dedicated to cutting releases of the gas, yet financial resources spent on this has \u201cone of the highest ratios of global warming benefit per dollar of capital invested\u201d. Unfortunately, a gap still exists between the political agreement achieved at the UN\u2019s climate conference, and the reality of finance allocation. As often, the transformation is slowed down because of inappropriate allocation of funds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World | HSBC&#8217;s head of responsible investing resigns after climate speech controversy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stuart Kirk, the global head of responsible investing at HSBC Asset Management, announced that he has resigned from his role. Kirk was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8e1a16ea-bf63-45f8-81af-dc41c0df4e06\">suspended<\/a> by HSBC in May following a provocative speech in which he accused policymakers of exaggerating the financial risks of climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In recent years, campaigners and shareholders have criticized HSBC for its role in financing companies that emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases. Furthermore, Kirk\u2019s speech sparked a heated debate about the value of investing based on ESG principles. Kirk was commenting about the so-called exaggeration of climate-related financial risks, HSBC was leading with two other European asset managers an activist shareholder campaign to push Japan\u2019s energy supplier J-Power, a major user of coal, to improve its climate plan and reduce its climate-related risks\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada | Lack of firm ESG rules enable greenwashing, market experts say<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ESG rulebook of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) do not include an explicit definition of ESG and do not require any measurable ESG outcomes, \u201callowing funds to label themselves as such even when they don&#8217;t materially further ESG objectives\u201d according to a legal expert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While regulators in Europe and the US are tightening rules on ESG investment to reduce the risks of greenwashing, the CSA maintains that its guidance is \u201cadequate\u201d. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Market experts say the lack of stronger rules risks eroding confidence in the industry, in a context of recent allegations of greenwashing at Bank of New York Mellon, Deutsche Bank&#8217;s DWS Group and Goldman Sachs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe | Parliament votes to label nuclear and gas as green<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The EU legislators approved a European Commission proposal to allow nuclear and natural gas-fired power plants to be categorized as green investments, including them in the EU Green Taxonomy and easing access to environmental funds of billions of euros.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the Taxonomy, new gas-fired plants built by 2030 will be recognized as a transitional energy source if they replace a coal- or fuel oil-fired plant, switch to a low-carbon gas like hydrogen by 2035 and stay within a 20-year maximum emissions cap. Existing nuclear plants can earn a green label if they agree to start using \u201caccident-tolerant fuels\u201d in 2025 and provide specifics about their 2050 plans for final radioactive waste storage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientists, environmentalists, and the investment management industry have previously raised concerns about gas and nuclear being deemed clean due to its possible harm to the EU\u2019s \u201cgold standard\u201d. In addition to developing cleaner aircrafts and fuels, the sector must engage into a broader transformation strategy, possibly including a revision of its business model.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe | Shell to build renewable hydrogen plant in Europe\u2026 and oil rig in Mexico<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shell has announced the construction of the largest green hydrogen plant (Holland Hydrogen I) in Europe. The plant, located in the Port of Rotterdam, is set to be completed in 2025 and produce as much as 60 tons of renewable hydrogen daily.<em><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shell claims it intends to \u201cbecome a net-zero emissions energy business\u201d by 2050. The monitoring and verification of the use of the funds implies that standard for valuation and third-party certification should be implemented.
