Webinar highlights | Climate literacy: the first step in climate action

,

In recent years, innovators have developed a new range of educational solutions to make climate science accessible to everyone, including team-building workshops, gamification, and e-learning platforms. At Codo Advisory’s Earth Day 2023 event, innovators and early adopters from France and Japan have showcased how science-based education on climate change can be made accessible to all employees, helping each company to advance its decarbonization journey. Let’s rewind and see what we have learned from them during our webinar.

How to implement climate education tools in Japan?

Climate Fresk

“We just hit a million of participants all over the world, with more than 800 participants in Japan. Workshops are delivered in a Japanese context, going further than translation but adapting to cultural and societal differences. For example, we try to create small groups when we talk about actions or feelings, making sure everyone is comfortable.”

Louise Hirao-Vermare, Japan Coordinator, Climate Fresk Association

Over 1 million participants in more than 50 countries have used The Climate Fresk, a climate change education workshop that was created in France. To enhance climate literacy for both domestic and foreign enterprises in Japan, Codo Advisory conducts Climate Fresk workshops in Japanese and English. Climate Fresk goes beyond mere translation of cards into Japanese; it takes the initiative to customize them according to the specific local issues encountered, creating a truly unique experience in Japan.

2 tonnes

“At 2 tonnes, we are beginning to go abroad and develop different languages. In our workshop, we alternate two moments: assessing what you want to change for yourself, and taking decisions as a group, to visualize how to reach global societal objectives. In Japan, a lot of companies have announced their objectives towards carbon neutrality: the purpose of 2 tonnes is to help visualize their carbon footprint now and to plan ahead their strategy.”

Gabriel Chevallier, Coordinator for Higher Education, 2tonnes

Understanding how much carbon we individually and collectively emit into the atmosphere is the goal of 2tonnes: through a simulation that examines the potential for both individual and group actions while evaluating the future effects of global warming based on scientific evidence, we become able to take practical action, to create a comprehensive strategy for the green transition. Codo Advisory help 2 tonnes in translating and implementation matters in Japan, creating a tool that serves best Japanese companies’ interests.

MyCO2

“Cultures and behavior are different in every country; with MyCO2 we have taken the time to translate the tool to Japanese, but this is not everything. Now, we want to do localization and have the behavioral data personalized to each country. We are improving the project every day, modifying the questionnaires to fit the Japanese day to day life and using a national data set. In the case of Japan, we also need to adapt this data to different regions, to have a more precise regionalized aspect of emissions.”

Adrien Pichon, CEO, MyCO2 Japan

MyCO2 is a tool that enables you to comprehend the extent of your daily carbon footprint, based on emissions caused by your individual behavior. With more than 40 000 users globally, MyCO2 encourages interaction between daily and work lives and businesses, as a complementary approach to understanding our impact on climate change. Through this workshop, participants become more aware of how the environment affects their daily lives and are empowered to take action at their individual level. Codo Advisory led the first professional MyCO2 workshops in Japan in April.

AXA Climate School

“AXA Climate School, by design, is a product that is meant for skills. It is a question of whether the best practices and the guidance is inclusive of the realities of people we are trying to talk to. When you are building an international proposition, it is essential to develop an option that is inclusive; in Japan, we are not only featuring case study from Asia Pacific in the module to ensure the right kind of models you are learning from is not from a region you are not exposed to, but we are also actively working on language accessibility.”

Shalmalee Nath, APAC Head, AXA Climate

AXA Climate Business has developed scalable tools that extend climate education across your entire firm and beyond a small number of individuals. They help organizations thrive in the sustainable transition by upskilling and involving all personnel, with participating businesses operating in a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, hospitality, and banking. Their flagship program, the Climate School, is used by more than 90 organizations today and unites everyone on the science of climate change as well as its effects on society. Codo Advisory is introducing this innovative platform to Japanese organizations keen to educate their employees about climate science and climate action.

Return of experience: Nippon Yusen

Nippon Yusen (NYK) was founded in 1885 and is one of the world’s leading maritime transportation companies. It currently operates more than 800 vessels, airplanes and trucks in 600 logistics centers in 40 countries and regions. A-listed by CDP since 2019, NYK initiated ESG management in 2021, realizing the significance of contributing to the worldwide drive toward sustainable development. As a result, NYK has evolved into a provider of sustainable solutions, producing new value for clients and partners: through ESG Navigators, they facilitate talks that connect the enterprise vertically, horizontally, and diagonally on sustainable issues. Representatives from Nippon Yusen’s decarbonization team discovered the Climate Fresk through Codo Advisory and are now preparing to expand the use of this workshop within the company.

“I was really impressed with the various information available around climate change in the workshop. Focusing on the cause and consequences of climate change and then the open conversation workshop, as well as the materials based on IPCC and the collaboration between participants made it exciting to use in our company.”

Captain Yohei Mozumi, Decarbonization Promotion Team, Nippon Yusen
